Why doesn't DAVIDsTEA list coconut as an allergen anymore?Updated an hour ago
As of January 2025 the FDA no longer considers coconut to be a major/priority allergen and has advised that it should be removed from all food/beverage allergen labelling. Rest assured, the way that ingredients lists are declared has not changed so you will still find coconut as part of the ingredients list when applicable.
Q&A
I thought the FDA only regulated food/beverage product in the USA, so why are you removing coconut as an allergen in Canada?
We know this might be surprising given that DAVIDsTEA has always included coconut as part of our allergen statements, but this deliciously sweet ingredient was only considered a major/priority allergen within the USA. Since our products are sold in the USA in addition to Canada, we have always included the major allergens from both countries as part of our allergen declaration. With this new change to the USA allergen labelling regulations, there is no longer a need to list coconut as an allergen in either country.
I have a coconut allergy – how can I know whether I can/cannot consume a tea product?
Though we understand that you may have grown accustomed to looking in the allergen statement when determining if a tea is safe for you to drink, coconut will remain part of the general ingredient list whenever part of a product. Carefully reviewing the ingredient list and speaking to a health practitioner for any specific concerns are the best ways to ensure whether a tea is right for you.
Why do some of your products/packaging list coconut as an allergen and some do not?
Moving forward any newly printed product packaging will no longer include coconut as part of the allergen statement. However, to prioritize our commitment to sustainability, any previously printed packaging that lists coconut in the allergens will continue to be sold as is. You can expect to see this packaging phased out as soon as possible.
